KINGSTON Jamaica – Tropical Strom Sandy is expected make landfall near Kingston, the Meteorological Service says.

In its 10:00pm Tuesday bulletin the Met Service said that Sandy gained speed and the centre is forecast the hit the island in the vicinity of Kingston near midday Wednesday.

 Tropical storm force winds are forecast to extend up to 220 kilometres (140 miles) from the centre.

Maximum sustained winds at 10:00pm Tuesday was near 95 km/h (60 mph) and Sandy is expected to reach hurricane strength by Wednesday morning before reaching Jamaica.

Sandy is then expected to cross over the island to the northern coast in St Mary before heading towards eastern Cuba by Wednesday evening.
